Escape the Suburbs with These Northeast Georgia Attractions

December 6, 2019

Atlanta and its surrounding suburbs provide a plethora of activities. The CNN Center, World of Coke, Atlanta Zoo, the Civil Rights Museum, The King Center, SunTrust Park, and Atlanta Aquarium are amongst the most popular. Additionally, great restaurants and shops currently surround the metro area, with many new and exciting places sprouting up all the time. Even with all these options, the hustle and bustle of city life, even suburban life, can be stressful at times.

Fortunately, for anyone in need of a change of scenery, Northeast Georgia is ripe with attractions. We have curated a list of three of our favorite Northeast Georgia getaways, taking care to include a variety of destinations for our diverse readers. Each unique location provides inexpensive or free admission and is located within three hours of Atlanta:

  • Tallulah Gorge State Park

It is the first item on our list for a reason. Tallulah Gorge is one of the most breathtaking sights to behold in the American Southeast. At two-miles long and up to 1,000-feet deep in places, Tallulah Gorge is a natural wonder that one simply must see in person to appreciate. It is a great place for seniors to get exercise and recharge while enjoying the wonders and benefits of being in nature. Visitors can hike trails of all levels of intensity, cross the park’s famous 80-foot high suspension bridge over the mighty Tallulah River, or simply relax and take in a one-of-a-kind view from the observation deck. Tallulah Gorge is located about two hours Northeast of Atlanta’s city center.

  • Helen

Helen, GA is a popular destination for a variety of people with a cross-section of interests. The entire town is designed as a replica of a Bavarian Alpine town—a little taste of the German Alps in Georgia’s Appalachian Mountains. You can spend the day strolling through the dynamic downtown area, exploring fun shops, enjoying delicious restaurants, and experiencing unique demonstrations such as glassblowing and leatherworking. Tubing on the Chattahoochee River, horse-carriage rides, and many more activities are also available. It is the perfect place to bring your grandkids, significant other, or just yourself. Helen is located about two Hours North of Atlanta.

  • Rollins Planetarium at Young Harris College

Young Harris College and the surrounding areas possess spectacular natural beauty along with unique educational opportunities for all its visitors.  Young Harris is a quaint college that has one of the largest and most highly regarded planetariums in the Southeast.  Using state-of-the-art equipment and a 40-foot projection dome, the school’s astronomy professor, Dr. Steve Morgan, draws on his expertise and infectious enthusiasm to teach visitors about the wonders of the cosmos.  Cost of admission is low ($5 for adults as of the publication of this blog) and public shows are held weekly during the school year.  Young Harris College is located about 2½ hours from Atlanta.
