As we continue to age, the needs of our bodies change. It is important to consider what nutrients your body needs. Everything we eat impacts our mentality and overall health. In order to support an active and independent lifestyle, you must continue to nourish your body and mind. There are a variety of food options that can protect your brain from mental decline.

Brain Boosters

Seniors can adjust their diets to benefit their brain health. In general, nutritional experts recommend consuming a variety of foods including leafy green vegetables, fruits, lean proteins, healthful fats, and whole grains.

Omega-3 is a vitamin that is known to aid in mood improvement, sharpening memory and protecting your brain against decline and can be found in fatty fish. Salmon, mackerel, herring, trout, anchovies, sardines, and tuna steaks are excellent sources of omega-3 fatty acids and protein.

There are many other great brain foods and drinks include coffee, blueberries, turmeric, broccoli, pumpkin seeds, dark chocolate, nuts, oranges, eggs, and green tea.

Worst Brain Foods and Drinks

The brain is the one part of your body that ensures everything else functions. The food you eat has correlates with how your brain is performing. Sugary drinks are the worst for your brain. The high-fructose corn syrup that is in a lot of sugary drinks may be particularly harmful in causing brain inflammation, impairing memory and learning. Studies also suggest they may increase the risk of dementia.

Some other bad brain foods and drinks include refined carbs, foods high in trans fats, highly processed foods, aspartame, excessive amounts of alcohol and fish high in mercury. These foods may be hard to avoid, so it is important to maintain balance with the foods that are beneficial to your health.

The Best Version of Your Brain

What you put into your body plays a large part in impacting your brain and your overall health. There is no perfect diet, but making healthier choices could mean less time at the doctor, boost alertness, improve memory and better mood. A healthy diet for your brain starts with you.
