It is common for seniors and older adults to experience clinical depression. Depression is a serious health condition that requires understanding and medical care. An estimated 6 million Americans who are aged 65 and older experience late-life depression. No matter what your age is, it is important to be mindful of your mental health. 

By using the proper resources you can start identifying signs of depression in yourself or others. Symptoms of depression vary from person to person and functioning abilities may change on a daily basis. It is important to watch for changes in sleep, appetite or movement. Depression may also result in physical side effects and can even weaken your immune system. It can cause a lack of energy, concentration or loss of interest in the things that you normally enjoy. Feelings of low self-esteem and hopelessness are also common in clinical depression. 

As symptoms differentiate between people, so does treatment options. Anyone experiencing depression symptoms should talk to their doctor. Some doctors will use multiple treatments in search of one that works for you.

Letting people know how you are feeling can be a great first step in treating clinical depression. By calling a friend or sharing a coffee together you are actively helping to lower your risk for depression and may increase your quality of life.
