Many studies say socializing and maintaining relationships is critical for older adults’ successful aging. Frequent social interactions help increase physical, cognitive and mental health.

Socializing has a ripple effect of health benefits for your mind to enjoy. As we discussed in our recent blog, 6 million Americans, aged 65 and older, experience late-life depression. Consistent socializing may help in reducing the risk of experiencing isolation, loneliness and depression. By staying socially active, you may be experiencing less anxiety and dealing with stress better. In addition, you are also improving your immune system and self esteem.

Socializing also improves older adults’ cognitive health. As you engage with others, your mind remains stimulated and sharp. One study says that cognitive decline was rated 70 percent less in people with frequent social contact than those with low social activity.

By having a support system, you’re more likely to succeed in sustaining your fitness goals. When you exercise your body, you’re also improving your physical health. When you exercise in group settings, you have the opportunity to benefit from the people around you. They are pushing to their fitness goals, which can motivate you to push towards your own fitness goals.
